Overview

The Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) Writing Scholarship is designed to support African writers by providing them with the financial freedom to focus on producing the first draft of a completed book. It is intended for writers who are not yet established and need time to write without the pressure of earning a living.

Coverage

Scholars receive a grant of £18,000, paid in monthly installments over twelve months. For non-fiction writers requiring additional research time, the Foundation may, at its discretion, extend the grant period for up to eighteen months.

Eligibility

Applicants must be writing in the English language and must have been born in Africa, or have both parents born in Africa. There are no age restrictions.

Requirements

Applicants must submit the following: 1) A 2,000 to 5,000-word sample of previously published work offered for sale, 2) Proof of publication and sale, 3) A scan of an official document confirming birth in Africa (for the applicant or both parents), 4) A 400–1,000 word description of the proposed book project, 5) A 200–300 word biography, and 6) Information on how you heard about the scholarship.
