Overview

The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship is a nine-month residential program designed for early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals. It aims to foster global collaboration in Asian Studies through a two-phase structure: a three-month residency at a co-hosting institution (in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Europe) followed by a six-month residency at IIAS, Leiden University, in the Netherlands.

Coverage

For funded academic fellows, the program provides a monthly stipend of €1,250 during the six-month residency in Leiden, a housing allowance of €1,200 per month, and a travel grant covering approved travel between the home country, the co-host institution, and the Netherlands. Fellows also receive access to IIAS office space, university libraries, and visa support.

Eligibility

The program is open to applicants from all over the world. It targets early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals.

Requirements

Applicants must apply under one of three categories: Category A (Academic - Funded), Category B (Academic - Self-Funded), or Category C (Independent Professional - Self-Funded). For Categories A and B, a PhD degree is required (or the defense must be completed by September 2026). Category C is open to journalists, writers, diplomats, policy makers, and curators with relevant experience. A good command of English is required.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online through the official IIAS website. Required documents include a CV, a work plan, and a list of publications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit two reference letters and a short video presentation.

Notes

The program selects two cohorts per year. Cohort 1 runs from September 2027 to May 2028, and Cohort 2 runs from March 2028 to November 2028.
