Overview

The FAO Internship 2026 is a paid internship program offered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It aims to engage talented and highly motivated young individuals to contribute their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to FAO’s areas of focus, particularly global food security and sustainable agriculture challenges. Interns will gain practical work experience, primarily at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, for a duration of 3 to 11 months, working on assignments aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals and Strategic Objectives.

Coverage

This is a paid internship program that provides a monthly stipend and generous financial support throughout its duration, aiming to reduce the financial burden on interns.

Eligibility

Applicants must be nationals of an FAO Member country (Ethiopian students are eligible). Candidates should be between 21 and 30 years old at the start of their internship. They must be currently enrolled in a recognized undergraduate or graduate degree program at the time of application, or have recently graduated from such a program. Proficiency in at least one of the FAO official languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian) is required, with knowledge of a second official language being an advantage. Interns must also hold appropriate residency or immigration status in the host country before the internship assignment begins. All applicants need to demonstrate adaptability to an international and multicultural environment and possess good communication skills. Applicants who have immediate family members (parents, siblings) employed by FAO in any capacity are ineligible. Interns who have already completed an internship with the organization are not eligible to apply again.

Requirements

To apply, candidates must submit a motivation letter and proof of attendance at a recognized university.

How to apply

The application process is online. All applicants should visit the official FAO recruitment portal (jobs.fao.org) and apply through the “Call for Expression of Interest” advertised on their career portal. Ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria and requirements for the internship. Submit your application online, including a motivation letter and proof of attendance at a recognized university. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Notes

The internship duration ranges from 3 to 11 months. The primary location for the internship is the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. This program offers a valuable learning opportunity to work with a prestigious UN organization and contribute to global food security and sustainable agriculture initiatives.
